WE LOVE THIS GUY: Brian Allen Carr

I’m bringing back the “We Love This [Person]” feature to draw your attention to the short stories of Brian Allen Carr. They’re awesome—dusty, masculine, startling, perverse. And, like much of the best writing today, they’re available online for free.

Start with “Running the Drain,” a very short story about a killer on the run. Every word is slathered in the flavor of a foreboding Mexico.

Next, “Not Hearing the Jingle,” a miniature epic about life on the border. It makes me want to listen to a modern-day cowboy ballad, like the Old 97’s cover song “El Paso.”

Another short one: “Falcon Jackson.” I’m not sure what’s going on here, but it’s a fantastic trippy collage, and it involves Michael Jackson.

Whisper to Scar” is perversely thrilling. It makes you sweaty with guilt for every fleeting thought in the narrator’s head.

And top it off with a glorified dick joke, “Tuxedos.”

Dude has a book coming out on Saturday.

I’m pretty sure it’s going to kick ass.

  1. This is cool — video of the author reading “Not Hearing the Jingle,” so you can read along with him.
