Sure, we all hated the shoddy, sensationalistic documentary about J. D. Salinger. But let’s not give up on documentary films about beloved works of literature altogether. The Phantom Tollbooth: Beyond Expectations might redeem them. Along with interviews with author Norton Juster and illustrator Jules Feiffer, it features an animated sequence narrated by David Hyde Pierce and (for whatever reason) footage of The New Yorker‘s Adam Gopnik sitting on a couch, drinking from a teacup.
